Former U.S. Congressman to Discuss America’s Uncertain Democratic Future in UA Talk

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A former U.S. Congressman and current Jacksonville State University scholar who says America is changing in unsettling ways will focus on this nation’s democratic future in a talk at The University of Alabama on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Hosted by UA’s political science department, Dr. Glen Browder’s talk will be at 7 p.m. in ten Hoor Hall, room 354. Browder, who served in the U.S. Congress from 1989-1996 is the author of new book, “The Future of American Democracy: A Former Congressman’s Unconventional Analysis.”

Browder has led a series of public discussions, sponsored by JSU’s Eminent Scholar Public Lecture Series, throughout the state on what he refers to as the uncertain future around America’s “Great Experiment.”

“America’s Great Experiment has indeed been a grand and glorious endeavor for more than 200 years, but our national democratic experiment also embodies principles and tendencies that inherently and continuously threaten American democracy,” Browder says.

Browder, an Eminent Scholar in American democracy at JSU, is also a visiting professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Prior to his stint in Congress, he served as Alabama’s Secretary of State and as a state legislator.

His series of lectures are designed to encourage debate, particularly among young people, about recent developments and their impact on democracy and this nation.
