UA Student Receives Rotary International Scholarship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshman mechanical engineering major Emad Abdel-Raouf recently was selected to receive the 2003-2004 Jack Seay Rotary International Scholarship.

The $1,500 scholarship from the Rotary Club Foundation of Tuscaloosa is awarded to students who are seeking degrees related to international understanding.

Abdel-Raouf, originally from Egypt, is a co-op student with Mercedes-Benz U.S. International and is interested in multi-national business.

“Being from Egypt and working for a German based company, Emad definitely has an international perspective and an appreciation for a variety of cultures,” said Dr. Beth Todd, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

In 1837, UA became the first university in the state to offer engineering classes and was one of the first five in the nation to do so. Today, the College of Engineering, with about 1,900 students and more than 90 faculty, is one of the three oldest continuously operating engineering programs in the country and has been fully accredited since accreditation standards were implemented in the 1930s.
