UA Engineering Student Receives Minority Scholarship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Milton Tarrell Nettles, a senior majoring in chemical and biological engineering from Monroeville, was recently awarded the AIChE Minority Scholarship Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, sponsored by the Minority Affairs Committee.

Nettles was awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship. He was selected based on his academic record, his participation in AIChE student and professional activities, and his career objectives.

The scholarship was awarded to 14 students nationally this year. In addition to the scholarship, the students will be assigned an AIChE mentor to assist them in their studies and future career plans. The selected students will be recognized at the National Student Conference Awards Ceremony in Nashville, Tenn.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA TodayAll-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
