Five University of Alabama faculty and staff members have been selected for Fulbright awards for educators to teach and research around the globe.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers more than 380 awards in over 120 countries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and complete professional projects abroad. Open to faculty, researchers, artists and other professionals, the program has connected nearly 450,000 Fulbrighters through new skills, global networks and deeper mutual understanding.
Dr. Mudasir (Roohi) Andrabi, associate professor with the Capstone College of Nursing, was awarded a Fulbright-Nehru U.S. Scholar Award to conduct research collaboration in Delhi, India, through her public health project, South Asian Cardiovascular Risk Reduction and Digital Coaching, or SACRED.
Working with faculty in the department of preventive medicine at Unani Medical College, Jamia Hamdard University, in New Delhi, she will develop and evaluate an eight-week cardiovascular disease prevention mobile health program for South Asian adults at elevated cardiovascular risk. The project combines a phone-based digital app, culturally tailored digital coaching, and self-management strategies to improve cardiovascular disease risk factors and cardiovascular health outcomes. The award will also support international research collaboration and capacity-building efforts between UA and Jamia Hamdard University.
Dr. Kate Brauman, deputy director of the Global Water Security Center, was awarded the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Water at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Brauman’s project, Bridging the Gap from Ecosystem Services to Water Security, seeks to develop robust intellectual linkages from ecosystem services to water security and national security. It will develop a clear framework to articulate and quantify the contributions of ecosystems, integrating literature from a range of fields in both social and biophysical sciences, and enable identification of potential avenues to boost national security through nature-based solutions.
Dr. Russell Matthews, Miller Professor of Management with Culverhouse College of Business, received a Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Business and Management at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Matthews and colleagues will use a mixed-methods approach to explore how subtle cultural nuances, work-life balance norms, and labor structures across the U.S. and Canada shape what employees view as discretionary versus required when it comes to these types of behaviors, and the potential consequences. Their work aims to provide leaders with a more granular, culturally aware framework for building healthy, high-performing workplaces that respect workers and their contributions.
Dr. Mairin Odle, associate professor of American Studies, received a Fulbright Scholar Award and will travel to Orléans, France, where she will conduct research and collaborate with scholars in the Laboratoire RÉMÉLICE for the study of cross-cultural interactions and transnational history in the Département d’études anglophones at the Université de Orléans in Orléans, France.
Odle’s current project uses historical archival research methods as well as critical and literary interpretative models to examine the role of biography in 19th century reform movements.
Dr. Glenn Tootle, professor in the department of civil, construction and environmental engineering, was selected as a recipient of the J. William Fulbright Research Scholar Award to collaborate with scientists and engineers on drought planning and management at the Slovak Academy of Sciences Institute of Hydrology in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The research project, Improved Drought Planning and Management in the Slovak Republic, will explore solutions for the extreme drought that Slovakia faces and provide the opportunity for the exchange of ideas among international engineers and scientists.
