Flu Update for August 26, 2009

The Student Health Center continues to see students who are exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The illness is generally mild; however, it is important for students who have flu to avoid contact with others as much as possible. If you have flu-like symptoms or think you may have been exposed to flu, please call the University’s flu hotline at 205-348-9184 during normal Student Health Center hours (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekend).

Continue to practice these basic steps to help limit the spread of flu or any virus:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.

To further help limit the spread of flu, the University is providing hand sanitizer stations in common areas of residence halls, dining areas and computer labs, and has ordered individual hand sanitizer bottles to provide to students in residence halls and in high traffic areas of campus. You are encouraged to maintain your own supply of hand sanitizer as well.
