Building Bama: Hewson Hall

The start of the academic year brought a new beginning for UA’s Culverhouse College of Business as Hewson Hall opened to students, faculty and staff just in time for the fall semester.

The new academic building is designed to connect Culverhouse faculty, staff and students through 31 collaboration rooms, 22 high-tech classrooms, 65 office spaces, three conference rooms, an executive boardroom and a multitude of meeting and flex spaces.

Hewson Hall provides much-needed additional learning space for the Culverhouse College of Business. Prior to the facility opening, the college occupied the same square footage as it did in 1994 when its enrollment was around 3,500 students. With a current enrollment of more than 9,600, Hewson Hall will allow Culverhouse students to comfortably learn and socialize in a dynamic facility.

The heart of Hewson Hall is a light-filled atrium space that serves as a student lounge and gathering area for informal and formal events. Other amenities include a grab-and-go café with an outdoor terrace, catering kitchen, large courtyard at the west entrance and FEMA-rated storm shelter.

Hewson Hall also features the Alabama Business Hall of Fame, a Hall of Honor on the ground floor that highlights stories of excellence from across the college and a unique space for first-generation students to gather and connect.

Culverhouse held a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 9. Building namesakes Marillyn and James Hewson were in attendance to celebrate the building’s official opening.
