Prom is a staple in American high school culture. It’s the place for ladies and gentlemen alike to flaunt their fashion sense and dance the night away. This night of fun, however, is not commonly celebrated in other countries. The South Asian Society at The University of Alabama wanted to re-create this night to remember for international students, but with a twist: to dress in attire from their home countries.
Here are the top looks from the night, featuring our students from around the world.
Creator of the South Asian Society Rikesh Patel and his wife, Nidhi Patel, enjoy their time at prom as a couple. As a U.S. native, Rikesh was able to experience a traditional prom. However, he was unable to bring his wife, who lived in India at the time. Rikesh states he “always wanted to take my wife to prom, and now I finally can.”
Tuscaloosa native Nisha Singh loves her Indian culture for its diversity. Here, she flaunts a vibrantly colored lehenga. This outfit is traditionally worn for formal events.
Graduate student Barnab Das describes his Indian culture as diverse yet cohesive. Here, Das chooses to rock a kurta and a Nehru jacket to show his pride in his country. This jacket is named after a former Indian prime minister, who wore it regularly to show pride in his country.

Graduate student Sujit Kuhwor and his wife, Rona Khadka, of Nepal describe their home country as rich-cultured and proud. Rona owns the dance floor in her baby pink kurta. It is traditionally worn for weddings, receptions and other formal events.
