The University of Alabama recently implemented a new Data Governance Policy to standardize definitions and promote consistency and trust in data across campus.
Align, UA’s data governance program, developed the policy after a year of collaborating with the campus community. According to André Taylor, UA’s data governance administrator, the policy provides consistent protocols with how faculty and staff enter, manage and use data daily.
“Our new policy outlines where employees fit in our data-driven landscape,” said Taylor. “We have provided clarity for roles and responsibilities that reduces ambiguity, improves accountability and empowers faculty and staff to act confidently within their scope.
“Ultimately, our new data governance policy reinforces the authority of the Data Governance Council, outlines clear expectations for data stewardship, strengthens compliance and risk management protocols, and ensures broad access to essential tools and training.”
Taylor says Align worked to develop a policy that would support UA’s strategic goals in the ever-evolving data ecosystem.
“Our new data governance policy will aid in increasing our productivity and innovation by providing clarity within processes and standards surrounding our data assets,” said Taylor. “Simultaneously, we can now enhance trust and transparency, streamline access to resources, and encourage a culture of accountability.
“Whether you’re filling out forms, interpreting reports, or finding your way through campus, all UA faculty and staff employees at every level will benefit from what we’ve captured in this policy.”
Align was formed in spring 2024. The council reviews data-centric issues and works to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the University’s data operations.
