Be Thunderstorm Ready

Severe Weather Awareness Week in Alabama is Feb. 3-7.

Severe thunderstorms are one of the most common forms of severe weather that impacts West Alabama.

Severe thunderstorms can be dangerous, bringing high winds, hail, lightning and heavy rain that can lead to flash flooding. Here are some essential safety tips to help you stay safe before, during and after a severe thunderstorm.

Before the Storm

  • Stay Informed: The UA Safety app provides severe weather information for the Tuscaloosa area. In the event of a severe thunderstorm warning, you will receive a UA Alert.
  • Prepare Your Home: Secure outdoor items, such as patio furniture, trampolines and grills, that could become projectiles in high winds. Trim trees and branches that could fall on your home.
  • Create an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries and a first aid kit.

During the Storm

  • Seek Shelter: Thunderstorm winds can be just as dangerous as winds associated with tornadoes. Treat all severe thunderstorm warnings like you would a tornado warning. Move to a sturdy building, preferably a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Avoid windows and doors.
  • Avoid Electrical Appliances: Lightning can cause electrical surges, so it’s best to unplug appliances during a storm.
  • Stay Indoors: Do not venture outside until the storm has completely passed. If you are caught outside, avoid open fields, hilltops and tall, isolated trees.

After the Storm

  • Check for Damage: Once it is safe, inspect your property for damage. Be cautious of downed power lines and report them to the authorities.
  • Stay Informed: Continue to monitor weather updates as additional storms may follow.
  • Help Others: Check on neighbors and friends to ensure they are safe and have the necessary supplies.
