Riding a bicycle around campus is a great way to get around quickly and stay active. However, it’s important to prioritize safety when you’re riding.
Make sure to follow these essential tips for staying safe while cycling on campus:
Follow Traffic Rules: In Alabama, bicycles are considered vehicles, so obey all traffic signals, signs, and lane markings. Failure to follow the rules of the road could lead to a ticket.
Use Bike Lanes: Many streets on campus have designated bike lanes. When a bike lane is present, cyclists are required by law to ride in the bike lane and not on the sidewalk.
Ride With Traffic: Always ride in the same direction as traffic. Never ride into oncoming traffic. Use hand signals when you are turning.
Stay Alert: Watch for obstacles, pedestrians and vehicles. Avoid using your phone or earbuds while cycling.
Be Visible: Make sure that drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists see you. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night, and equip your bike with front and rear lights.
Register Your Bike: The University requires every bicycle operated or stored on campus be registered. Registering your bike is free and easy with online registration through your myBama account.
Lock Your Bike: Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Use a sturdy lock and secure the frame and wheels to one of the many bike racks on campus. Do not lock your bike to any structure other than a bicycle rack.
Get Regular Maintenance: Keep your bike in good condition by regularly checking the brakes, tires and chain. Get a bicycle safety check for free by visiting the Outdoor Recreation Pop-Up Bike Shop Nov. 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. outside of the Fresh Food Company.
