A Veterans Day Service Tradition

In honor of Veterans Day, members of The University of Alabama Campus Veterans Association cleaned the graves of veterans in Evergreen Cemetery next to UA’s campus. Cleaning the graves of veterans at local cemeteries has become a tradition for CVA ahead of Veterans Day.

“We want to raise awareness and help support the veteran community,” said Jordan Golden, a UA student and U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “Some of these veterans may not have family left around to actually clean their headstones, so we want to provide that service for them.”

The crew started the day before using a federally approved cleaner to soak the headstones, many of which were covered in moss and dirt. The following day they used soap and water to gently scrub the monuments and placed American flags at each grave.
