Make a Plan for Disasters and Emergencies

September is National Preparedness Month, a time set aside each year to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies.

You can receive UA Alerts and weather information through the UA Safety app.

Throughout the month, The University of Alabama will share tips to help you prepare.

The first tip is to make a personal emergency plan.

Your plan should include information on how you will receive emergency alerts and warnings, where you can shelter and how to evacuate.

The University of Alabama uses a variety of ways to communicate during an emergency on campus, including UA Alerts, email, digital signage, the campus public address system and 92.5 FM UA Info Radio. Make sure to keep your contact information updated in myBama so you can receive UA Alerts.

The UA Safety app is also a great way to receive UA Alerts and information about severe weather for Tuscaloosa County. Users can also stream 92.5 FM UA Info Radio directly through the UA Safety app. The app is available for download on iOS and Android devices.

In the event of a tornado watch or warning, campus storm shelters and Best Available Refuge Areas will open. Use the UA Safety app or the campus map to locate the shelter nearest you.

Follow these guidelines if instructed to shelter in place.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to evacuate a building. If a fire alarm is activated, or you are ordered to evacuate by University or public safety personnel, remain calm and move to the nearest exit. Alert others as you leave. Find more tips on building evacuations on the Office of Emergency Management’s website.

Familiarize yourself with the University’s emergency evacuation map in case a campus evacuation becomes necessary.
