UA to offer degree in cyber security

It’s called a bachelor of science degree in cyber security and The University of Alabama will be the first institution in the state of Alabama to offer it on an undergraduate level. The program is in response to a growing need for professionals well versed in the protection of digital information. The new cyber security degree will be based in their department of computer science in the College of Engineering.

American Fulbright scholars in Newcastle

Aligning with its commitment to enhance international collaboration and foster global impact, the University of Newcastle welcomes two visiting American Fulbright Scholars who will contribute to research in water sustainability and eating behavior. Visiting from the University of Alabama, Professor Sazonov develops wearable devices to study health-related behaviors and deliver personalized behavioral interventions. His research group developed sensors for monitoring of food intake, cigarette smoking, and physical activity.

Alabama among worst in nation for empty housing

Greene County, deep in Alabama’s Black Belt region, is the smallest county in the state, and one of the poorest. It’s one of only two counties in Alabama with fewer than 10,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And it’s shrinking – it lost nearly 10 percent of its population between 2010 and 2018. More than 42 percent of all housing units in Greene County were vacant in 2018, according to the Census. That’s the highest rate in Alabama, a state that itself is near the top of the country in terms of vacancy rate. “Obviously it’s not a good sign when you have a well above average vacancy rate in an area,” said Stuart Norton, a research coordinator for the Alabama Center for Real Estate at the University of Alabama. “But in the long term, it could present an opportunity for investment.”

No. 45: College of Human Environmental Sciences at The University of Alabama.
