
Appointments and Elections
Stacy Alley, head of musical theatre and associate professor in the department of theatre and dance, was recently elected president of the Musical Theatre Educators’ Alliance. MTEA was founded to create a forum for professors and industry professionals from around the world, including Tony winners, authors, heads of prestigious training programs, to engage in a vital conversation on the practical and pedagogical issues facing them in preparing students for exciting careers in musical theatre.
Honors, Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Sharony Green, associate professor in the department of history, was awarded the 2020 PEN/Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History. This award recognizes a literary work of nonfiction that uses oral history to illuminate an event, individual, place or movement. The winner receives a $10,000 grant meant to help maintain or complete their ongoing project. Using this grant, Green is extending the ethnographic work for her completed manuscript addressing spatial and racial politics in Florida.
Pete Schulte, associate professor in the department of art and art history, had his recent solo exhibition at McKenzie Fine Art in New York City included in Hyperallergic’s year-end review of significant shows. Art critic Thomas Micchelli placed Schulte’s work in the context of some renowned company: Nancy Spero, Eva Hesse, Lucien Freud, Louise Lawler, as well as important group exhibitions at the New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum.
Dr. Yang Xiao, professor in the department of computer science, has been named an IEEE Fellow for the Class of 2020. He is being recognized for contributions to wireless medium access control. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.



Performances and Exhibits


Jonathan Cumberland, assistant professor of art in the department of art and art history, had a poster design accepted to the Mi Metropolia poster exhibition, hosted by Escucha MiVoz, at Cultura Zapopan in Zapopan, Mexico. Only 54 posters were selected from 2,200 entries from 51 countries for this international juried exhibition.
Dr. Andrew Raffo Dewar, associate professor in New College and School of Music, and Pete Schulte, associate professor in the department of art and art history, have a two-person installation and performance titled “23 Minutes Over Birmingham: Pete Schulte / Andrew Raffo Dewar,” at Samford University through March 6.
Publications and Presentations
Yonathan A. Arbel, assistant professor of Law, co-authored “The Case Against Expanding Defamation Law,” 71 Alabama Law Review 454-497 (2019).
Richard Delgado, John J. Sparkman Chair of Law, published “Children’s Rights to a Livable Future,” 71 Alabama Law Review 262-289 (2019).
Dr. Rachel Stephens, associate professor of art history, presented a talk, “Loyal Artists, Loyal Slaves: Confederate Artists in Civil War Richmond,” at Virginia Humanities in Charlottesville in January.
