University of Alabama plans tribute to Dornell Cousette
The Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 18
The lights of Bryant-Denny Stadium will be illuminated in blue lights from 8-9 p.m. Wednesday in tribute to Tuscaloosa Police Department Investigator Dornell Cousette. Cousette was killed in the line of duty Monday night. UA said that a Tuscaloosa police vehicle will be parked at the Walk of Champions in front of the stadium until noon Friday. Members of the community are encouraged to visit the vehicle and pay their respects.

UA students deliver doughnuts to TPD after officer was killed

We are here outside of the Tuscaloosa police headquarters and you see the officers’ vehicles, and the flag at half-staff out here, and moments ago, 2 students from the University of Alabama coming by to drop off some donuts as this community is trying to put its arms around the Tuscaloosa police, and their officer, and the family that is grieving here today.

Volunteers sought for public mural painting in Holt, Alberta

Volunteers are needed to help with a public mural project designed to beautify areas in Holt and Alberta. Artists, students, parents and volunteers will paint murals from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jaycees Fairground in Alberta and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 26 at the water tower in Holt. Volunteers must register by calling the United Way of West Alabama at 205-345-6640 or emailing cheryl@uwwa.org. Guest artists Ruth O’Connor of the O’Connor Art Studios, Charlotte Wegrzynowski of the University of Alabama Department of Art and Art History, and Matt Daugherty, an art instructor at Holt High School, will lead the effort to paint the murals.

In teacher shortage, Alabama looks to South Korea

A group of Alabama education leaders and lawmakers will go to South Korea next month to explore the possibility of bringing Korean math and science teachers to classrooms here. Peter Hlebowitsh is the dean of the University of Alabama’s College of Education. He said universities are upping their recruitment efforts of potential teachers by stressing the job security and a schedule that allows for time with family and other interests.

UA Law Professor Bryan Fair discusses the constitution at Washburn School of Law

The Washburn University Law School celebrated the anniversary of the constitution today, guest speaker Bryan Fair a professor from the University of Alabama’s school of law wants the students to appreciate the significance of the constitution, he said it is a symbol of nationhood for the country that hasn’t always been honored for everyone. He reminded the future lawyers who attended it is their duty to ensure the constitution is upheld for everyone.

UA holds public health emergency training
WVUA – Sept. 17
The University of Alabama is preparing for the worst when it comes to a public health emergency. UA conducted point of dispensing training today at Coleman Coliseum. If there is an infectious illness, like the flu, that can be combated or prevented by medication, training like this helps prepare UA to be a place where students, faculty and staff can receive that medication.

Volunteers needed for Moundville Native American Festival
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 18
Volunteers are needed for the 31st annual Moundville Native American Festival. The festival, which celebrates Native American culture through performers, vendors, demonstrators, living history teachers and more, will be held Oct. 9-12 at Moundville Archaeological Park. Volunteers can work in the gift shop, the children’s area, the demonstrations area and in parking control. Volunteers are also needed to monitor the exhibits and provide information to guests.

Buy for RISE event attracts funds for special education

The Tuscaloosa RISE Center recently held its largest fundraiser with the goal of raising over $50,000 to fund the organization’s educational efforts and keeping the promise of never requiring money from the families they serve.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority holds job fair
WVUA – Sept. 17
The Tuscaloosa chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority incorporated hosted its third annual job fair today at the McDonald Hughes Center. Employers ranged from the University of Alabama and Shelton State to the U.S. armed forces and Z.F. Industries. Seven community service organizations were there, as well. The sorority )s economic development chair told us it was important to have different types of employers.
