RESEARCHERS TO STUDY IRRIGATION’S IMPACT ON SOUTHERN FARMS — Unique research led by UA will study whether more irrigation-fed farms in the Deep South could lead to a more robust agriculture industry, potentially increasing its economic impact. With a four-year, $1.75 million grant, UA researchers will examine how a transition from rain-fed farming to irrigation-fed farming in the Deep South could impact harvests and water use. EARLY MOVE-IN THIS WEEK – Nearly 2,800 students are expected to arrive at UA Aug. 7-9 for early move-in. Early arrivals include students taking part in the Honors College’s Alabama Action, Outdoor Action, or Health Action service-learning programs, Camp 1831, Bama Biology Bootcamp and Panhellenic sorority recruitment. Members of the Million Dollar Band, and some student athletes will also move in early. Media are invited to get photos and video of students as they arrive to move into the residence halls at Presidential Village Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 9:30 a.m. Approximately 4,250 additional students living in UA residence halls will move in Aug. 16-18. UA ALIGNS INVENTOR RESOURCES, COLLABORATION WITH BUSINESS INCUBATOR —The robust push by UA to promote entrepreneurship both on campus and throughout the region is increasing with an alignment of resources to better support innovators. The Bama Technology Incubator, which includes on-campus laboratories and additional support for start-up companies, will change its name to EDGE Labs and serve as the strategic counterpart to The EDGE, a 26,000 square-foot off-campus business incubator that opened in February as a collaboration between UA, the City of Tuscaloosa and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama. UA CREATES PEDIATRIC FELLOWSHIP FOR FAMILY MEDICINE PHYSICIANS – UA’s College of Community Health Sciences has created an innovative fellowship program to provide comprehensive instruction for family medicine physicians seeking additional skills in pediatric care. The year-long pediatric fellowship will offer a variety of transformative experiences in both primary and tertiary care settings. Fellows will also receive research time and financial support for continuing education activities.
