Study explores new approach to lupus treatment
University of Alabama researchers have found that a combination of an existing immunosuppressant drug and a compound derived from dietary sources showed greater benefit than either treatment alone in a preclinical model of lupus.
Why This Matters: Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, and existing treatments, like cyclosporine, are often taken with steroids to manage inflammation. This study explored whether molecules like urolithin A, a compound naturally metabolized by gut bacteria from precursors in pomegranates, berries, and nuts, but administered here as a synthetic compound, could eventually manage that inflammation with fewer side effects.

UA-led project builds AI tool for physics data
A UA-led research team will build an artificial intelligence tool to help sift through that flood of data, speeding up the pace of discovery so scientists can focus on the science itself.
Why This Matters: The Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission is a national initiative that unites government, industry, academia and philanthropy to accelerate scientific discovery through a platform combining AI, supercomputing, quantum systems and advanced scientific instruments. The UA-led project is one of only 278 selected for Phase 1 funding from more than 5,000 proposals.
