TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A University Alabama scholar and administrator with expertise in employee well-being and human resource management has been named dean of UA’s College of Continuing Studies.
Dr. Jonathon Halbesleben, who has served as interim dean of the College since November 2018, has been named dean, said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, UA executive vice president and provost.
The appointment is effective May 1.
“Jonathon has demonstrated — both since his arrival on campus in 2010 and prior – impeccable leadership qualities and a dedication to teaching, research and service,” Whitaker said.
“The College of Continuing Studies is well-positioned to continue flourishing under his guidance.”
As dean, Halbesleben will be the chief academic officer for the College with oversight for all its academic programs and activities.
Before his appointment as interim dean, Halbesleben served as senior associate dean and the Russell Professor of Business Administration in UA’s Culverhouse College of Business, a position to which he was appointed in 2015. He was UA’s HealthSouth Chair in Health Care Management for approximately five years before his appointment as senior associate dean.
Halbesleben has written or edited 13 books and published more than 95 peer-reviewed journal articles. His research, funded by such entities as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Defense, has focused on employee well-being, work-family issues and relationships in and out of the workplace.
He’s particularly interested in workplace stress, work-family issues and employee engagement.
A fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the 2015 winner of UA’s President’s Faculty Research Award, Halbesleben holds a doctorate and master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor’s degree from Winona State University.
Before his UA arrival, Halbesleben taught in a consortium online MBA program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and within an executive masters of health administration program at the University of Missouri.
Halbesleben is the former editor of the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and he serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Management.
