Alabama Students Use Break to Help in Florida Storm Recovery

University of Alabama team wins $1 million grant to develop tool to combat opioid abuse

Across the country, opioid abuse has reached epidemic levels, severely affecting communities and straining public safety resources. The Institute of Business Analytics, or IBA, a research unit at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business, has received an approximate $1 million grant from the Office of Justice Programs at the Justice Department to develop a data-driven tool to help officials better understand the scope of the opioid epidemic in Alabama and how to intelligently allocate resources.

Auburn University leads $2 million DOE project to maximize U.S. fuel economy

Auburn University researchers are leading a $2 million U.S. Department of Energy project that promises to improve fuel efficiency and economy. The project will create a bio-based fuel additive that can be blended with diesel fuel to reduce soot and greenhouse gas emissions and yield cleaner engine operation in cold-weather conditions. Joining as collaborators in the research are Cornell University, the University of Alabama, Virginia Tech and corporate partners Microvi Biotech Inc. and EcoEngineers.

Gender pay parity laws are still falling short, here’s why

ReadBAMARead helps stock city middle school libraries

The ReadBAMARead Foundation has donated $25,000 in books to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education’s “Strong Libraries; Strong Schools” campaign in support of school libraries. “Libraries and their mission are at the heart of ReadBAMARead,” said co-founder and Alabama gymnastics coach Dana Duckworth in a press release announcing the gift. “We are so excited to have this opportunity to continue to impact literacy and public school libraries in the Tuscaloosa community and we completely and enthusiastically support the ‘Strong Libraries; Strong Schools’ initiative.”

Cullman woman named Miss River City

A Cullman native claimed the title of Miss River City on Sunday at Hartselle High School as a Miss Alabama preliminary returned to Morgan County for the first time since a lack of funding shuttered the local competition three years ago. Judges named Jessica Patterson, a junior at the University of Alabama and a Crimsonette, as Miss River City.
