UA students screen preschoolers for vision problems

Statistics show that millions of kids from across the country suffer from poor vision including some here in Alabama. Today, students from the University of Alabama tried to fill that gap in access to health care in west Alabama. These pre-school students attending Flatwoods Elementary in Northport took a special test Monday morning. One by one, they sat in a chair and looked into this camera screen after the lights were turned off. Members of the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility at The University of Alabama provided the free vision screening.

Moundville celebrates culture with 30th annual Native American festival

The Moundville Native American Festival will hold its 30th annual festival Oct. 3-6 at Moundville Archaeological Park. And while the festival is another year older, its objective hasn’t changed: to teach its expected 13,000 visitors about Native Americans while celebrating the culture’s achievements. The park, located on the Black Warrior River 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, preserves 326 acres where 800 years ago, 29 flat-topped mounds were constructed. The mounds served as civic and ceremonial structures as well as the homes of nobles. Organized by the University of Alabama Museums, the festival will give attendees the opportunity to experience Native American performers, demonstrators, living history teachers and craft vendors.

Lockheed Martin CEO and University of Alabama alumnae Marillyn Hewson is the most powerful woman in business, according to Fortune magazine. The site’s annual “referendum on the state of women in business” says the Kansas native is “leading a cadre of women at the helm of defense contractors,” as she becomes the new No. 1.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh categorically denied two sexual assault allegations haunting his Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Fox News last night, and in an ironic twist, he’s now facing intense scrutiny for talking over his wife about whether there should be an investigation into the sexual abuse claims … The moment quickly went viral after University of Alabama Law Professor Joyce Alene tweeted about the segment early Tuesday morning, pointing out that Kavanaugh’s reluctance to let his wife speak suggests a much deeper problem he has with respecting women’s right to their own opinions.

LEND A HAND: UA dance group honored for fundraising

Children’s of Alabama honored the University of Alabama Dance Marathon program in September for donating more than $1 million to the hospital over a seven-year period by presenting the organization with a recognition plaque on the Pillars of the Community display in the hospital.

FDA cracks down on e-cigarette ‘epidemic’

Due to the store’s wide variety of products, Richardson, a junior majoring in psychology and criminal justice, interacts with different customers on a daily basis, including college students … “The FDA is tackling Juul because the company has clearly cultivated a youth market but also because the FDA can’t really do much about Marlboro – because cigarettes were grandfathered into the bill, signed by President Obama in 2009, that gives the FDA regulatory authority over cigarettes,” said Dr. Alan Blum, professor of family medicine and Gerald Leon Wallace M.D. Endowed Chair in Family Medicine at The University of Alabama.

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA HONOR LIST SUMMER 2018

A total of 493 students enrolled during the 2018 summer term at the University of Alabama were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 or above or the President’s List with an academic record of 4.0 (all As). The UA Dean’s and President’s lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.

University offers support to students affected by Hurricane Florence

As the East Coast attempts to recover from the damage and flooding caused by Hurricane Florence, UA students from North and South Carolina are also dealing with the impact of the storm … In light of the hurricane, Jeremy Henderson, director of student care and well-being, sent out an email to all students from North and South Carolina, informing them of the support and resources offered by the University.

Geography professor chases hurricane

Since experiencing Hurricane Frederic as a child, Jason Senkbeil, associate professor of geography, has been interested in meteorology and the science behind hurricanes. His encounter with hurricanes at such a young age – and continuing to see more of the storms throughout his life – only strengthened his fascination with them.

University begins partnership with TurboVote

Grover, a senior studying politics, business and social justice in the New College, helped bring the online voting support system, TurboVote, established in 2012, to the attention of student government, the Division of Student Life, and Mary Lee Caldwell, the University’s director of mentoring resilience and citizenship.

Natural History with the Experts to teach public on game day

It will take place three hours before kickoff on Saturday and is completely free. Staff members from the museum will be there to answer any questions the public has.
