She wants people to have that same familiarity when it comes to stopping sex trafficking. The University of Alabama’s School of Social Work has been awarded a $1.35 million grant from the United States Department of Justice to improve outcomes of Alabama youths who are victims of human sex trafficking.

UA students use 3-D printer to make prosthetic hands for children

With the simple bend of the wrist, a child’s hand can move. It’s a reality taking form in the Alabama prosthetic project. Valerie Levine is just one of four students at The University of Alabama using a 3-D printer to create prosthetic hands for children. The hand is made of plastic, fishing wire and screws. The program partners with hospitals and has fitted four kids with hands.
Budding entrepreneurs can compete for $1,000 at River Pitch event

The River Pitch Business Idea Competition will be held from 5-9 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Tuscaloosa River Market, 1900 Jack Warner Parkway … River Pitch is a joint effort of the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute and the Edge Entrepreneurship Center, both of which are extensions of The University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and the city of Tuscaloosa.
Traffic Research Project in Tuscaloosa

Tuscaloosa is the first city in Alabama to take part in a new project aimed at paving the way for self-driving cars. New short-range radios installed at dozens of traffic signals throughout Tuscaloosa and Northport will be collecting data for research aimed at decreasing travel time, reducing vehicle crashes and laying the groundwork for eventually supporting self-driving cars. Researchers say one useful application of the radios will be red light warnings in cars, similar to collision warnings already installed in some newer vehicle models.

The “Haunting at the Museum” will be held from 5:30-8 p.m., beginning at the Alabama Museum of Natural History, 427 Sixth Ave. The event will include guided candlelit ghost walks around the Quad, ghost stories at the Gorgas House Museum, 810 Capstone Drive, and spooky crafts for kids in Smith Hall at the Alabama Museum of Natural History.
