Alabama Quilts at Gorgas House September 16, 2016 Written by Cathy Butler-Burnette 1 min read XFacebookLinkedInEmail Display of Alabama quilts runs through Sept. 30. Unusual appliqué detail shown here. Pine Tree Pattern, quilted by the women of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Talladega County. Schaudies-Banks-Ragland Collection Fence Rail or Rail Fence Pattern, 1860, made with hand combed cotton. Yo-Yo Quilt, 1950s, made of hundreds of individual pieces, quilted by 13-year-old quilter Pinwheel Quilt, circa 1860, probably a fund raising quilt. Donors paid to add their names to the border. Wear on this Ragland Collection quilt illustrates the everyday usefulness of quilts as cover, in addition to their role as folk art.
