MAY INTERIM CLASSES Professors at The University of Alabama are offering a number of thought-provoking and unusual classes during UA’s May Interim session, which runs from Monday, May 9, through Friday, May 27. Class subjects include fantasy writer Terry Pratchett, the television series “Mad Men,” a mock wedding and knitting. JONES GALLERY SHOWCASES MINIATURE ART – A new exhibit at UA’s Paul R. Jones Gallery in downtown Tuscaloosa features miniatures through Friday, July 22. The exhibit, “In Miniature: Small Pictures from The Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art,” was curated by Emily Bibb, the gallery’s collections manager, and is free and open to the public. The Paul R. Jones Gallery honors the late Paul R. Jones who, during his lifetime, amassed one of the largest collections of African-American art in the world. Jones donated more than 2,100 pieces of his collection, now valued at $10.3 million, to UA in 2008. The gallery is at 2308 Sixth St. in downtown Tuscaloosa. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 8 p.m. the first Friday of every month. UA NASA ROBOTICS TEAM READY OF CONTEST – A team of students from the UA College of Engineering leaves late this week to defend their title at a NASA-sponsored competition. Alabama Astrobotics built a robot that can dig and collect simulated Martian soil and will compete early next week in Florida. LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE — The Alabama winners of the 23rd Letters About Literature competition have been selected and will be announced at a ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at The University of Alabama’s Gorgas Library, room 205. Letters About Literature is a national reading and writing contest for students in grades four through 12, according to read.gov. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write a letter to the author about how the work impacted their lives. CONFERENCE ON TRAILS — UA’s Center for Economic Development in partnership with the Alabama Trails Commission is sponsoring a leadership workshop on Alabama trails from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in Tuscaloosa. The one-day workshop, which features trail tours, will be at the Mary Ann Phelps Activity Center, 2200 Rock Quarry Drive. The workshop will feature information on innovative public-private partnership case studies including the Back Country Horsemen Association, the West Alabama Mountain Bike Association, Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority and the Cheaha Trail Riders.
