STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SPACEX HYPERLOOP CONTEST – A team of UA engineering students will take part in Friday and Saturday’s SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition Design Weekend, a national contest on the leading edge of transportation research. LEADERSHIP DIVERSITY COMPETITION HOSTED ON CAMPUS   — Schools from across the country will make up 14 teams in the second annual Culverhouse Leadership Diversity Competition beginning Thursday on UA’s campus. Stillman College and Tuskegee University will each have three teams; Rhodes College will have two teams; and Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Rust College, Tulane, Tougalooa and Xavier will each have one team representing their schools. During the three-day competition, teams are given a real case study to analyze and devise a solution to the problem. The teams will then present to a panel of business executives. Monetary awards are given to the teams who place in the top three. UA TO HOST ‘DOING WHAT MATTERS’ FOR CHILDREN CONFERENCE – Children’s advocacy leaders and education experts will meet at UA Jan. 26 to address various child and family needs and to explore ways to improve the quality of life in Alabama. The “Doing What Matters for Alabama’s Children Conference” will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bryant Conference Center. Nancy Buckner, commissioner of Alabama Department of Human Resources, and Dr. Thomas R. Bice, state Superintendent of Education, will be among the conference speakers. LULLABY CONCERT – UA’s Child Development Resources hosts a Lullaby Concert from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. The free community event is designed for parents and children, birth to 5, to enjoy music and reading together. Entertainment will include storytellers, a musical petting zoo, various musicians and more. HANDS-ON FAMILY NIGHT – Children and their families can explore the academic world at UA during the fifth annual Hands-On Family Night at Smith Hall from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. With a safari theme, this year’s event features exhibits by graduate students in different departments, as well as food and door prizes donated by various local businesses. MUSEUM KICKS OFF CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS NEXT WEEK – UA’s Alabama Museum of Natural History kicks off its Museum Monday and Growing Up Wild Preschool next week. Museum Mondays, offered to kindergarten through second-graders, runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. the first Monday of the month. Cost is $8 per session. Growing Up Wild Preschool runs from 10 a.m. to noon the first Friday of the month for preschoolers and their caregivers. The cost is $2. Registration is required; call 205/348-7550 to register.
