Session provides info for college admissions

The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa alumni chapter is hosting an information session for high school students and those considering further pursuing their education. This free event will take place at Northridge High School, 2901 Northridge Road in Tuscaloosa, from 6-7:30 p.m. today. Administrators from Auburn University, Samford University, Shelton State Community College, Stillman College, UA, the Army, the Army Reserve, the Marine Corps and the Navy will be available for questions.

UATD to perform Mel Brooks musical classic Young Frankenstein

The story of “Frankenstein” is one that is familiar to many, but next week at the Marian Gallaway Theatre, the dark and twisted tale will be told in a new, and more entertaining, light. The University of Alabama Theatre and Dance are performing “Young Frankenstein,” a smash Broadway musical based on the popular film of the same name, Tuesday through Sunday. Stacy Alley, assistant professor of musical theatre and dance, is the director and choreographer of the show. Alley explained that both fans of the movie and those new to the story will find something to enjoy in this performance. “It’s going to appeal to different generations for different reasons,” Alley said. “People who know and love the movie hopefully are going to be satisfied with hearing the jokes and gags they are familiar with. Also, it’s a musical and it’s something new.”

Dr. Tricia Witte is an addiction expert at The University of Alabama. Now, it’s not always a stereotypical drug addict getting hooked on a strong narcotic like heroin. Often, it’s people prescribed addicting prescription pain killers, looking for their next cheap, readily available fix. “They get hooked, and they need something little more which is shown in their tolerance. Pain pills are expensive. They are sometimes hard to find, and surprisingly heroin is cheaper and it’s easier to find.”

Bestselling author visits Bama Theatre on Tuesday

The author of the bestselling novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife” will be at the Bama Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to read from her works and take questions from the audience. Audrey Niffenegger wrote “the 2003 science fiction/romance tale that sold about 3 million copies and was adapted into a 2009 film. The event, presented by the University of Alabama creative writing department, is free and open to the public. The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Ave.

International Education Week at The University of Alabama

It’s International Education Week at The University of Alabama, and that means events all during this week are celebrating the benefits of international education and exchange programs worldwide. This morning on the Gorgas house lawn, Tai Chi instructor Yun Fu led a dozen participants in what she says is wonderful for both the mind and body.
