UA Honors College Students to Perform Service Projects in Marion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — About 35 students and 10 student leaders from The University of Alabama’s Honors College will perform hands-on service projects in downtown Marion from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Nov. 14.  Projects include painting and gardening as well as general maintenance. Once the students finish their work, the student leaders will lead discussion about the day’s events in small groups.

The UA organization 57 Miles will be joined by Marion Military Institute, Renaissance Marion, the city of Marion, and UA Honors Year One. These groups have all pledged volunteers. If anyone else is interested in volunteering, contact 57 Miles at 57miles@ua.edu.

Founded in the summer of 2013, 57 Miles is a campus-community partnership between UA’s Honors College and Perry County. Through 57 Miles, Honors students have year-round opportunities to give back to communities-in-need, learn about the Black Belt’s vibrant history, and put education into action by tackling real challenges of rural poverty. 57 Miles is, according to the group,  not a distance that separates, but a place where passion meets purpose.
