UA Music Student’s Composition to be Performed at Carnegie Hall

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.  – A composition by Tyler Grant, a student in The University of Alabama’s School of Music, has been selected to be showcased at Carnegie Hall in New York City in April.

“Panoramic Landscapes” will be performed by the Scarsdale, New York, High School wind ensemble under the direction of Jason Noble. It is Grant’s first work to be played at Carnegie Hall.

Originally written for a brass ensemble, Grant later transcribed the three-minute concert fanfare for full wind orchestra. In it, he portrays the landscapes one might see from a mountaintop.

“Ever since my early childhood, nature has been a major part of my life and is certainly a major source of inspiration now,” said Grant, a sophomore from Hoover majoring in music education. “This piece is my attempt at depicting these elements of nature that I find myself surrounded by on a regular basis.”

Grant has written several award-winning works for concert bands, marching bands and chamber groups.  His band music appears on editor’s choice lists and is performed by district and state honor bands. He received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and was named a winner in the Dallas Wind Symphony’s 2014 Call for Fanfares competition.

Venues where his work has been showcased include the Midwest Clinic, the Southeastern Trumpet Festival, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Walt Disney World. He is a regularly invited guest conductor and clinician for school districts and honor bands at the elementary, junior high and high school levels and has contributed to industry publications and educational resources. He holds membership in ASCAP, the International Tuba Euphonium Association and the National Association for Music Education.

The School of Music is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships and Goldwater Scholarships.
