UA Honors College Freshmen Arrive Early for Week of Service

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — More than 250 University of Alabama Honors College freshmen and upper-class leaders will begin the fall semester with community service projects through Alabama Action, Outdoor Action and Black Belt Action.

The programs will run mornings from Monday, Aug. 10, to Friday, Aug. 15, in the West Alabama community. Students in the Honors College’s Alabama Action will work at local schools, while the Honor College’s Outdoor Action students will work on rivers and creeks as well as Lake Lurleen State Park. Black Belt Action students will work in Marion.

Alabama Action

Some 150 UA freshmen along with student leaders will work at Taylor Primary and Englewood Elementary schools in south Tuscaloosa. At Englewood, students will paint the cafeteria, library and other areas as well as create an outdoor classroom and renovate the playground. The 2015 program is the 15th annual Alabama Action project organized and carried out by UA honors students.

Outdoor Action

More than 90 students will participate in the Outdoor Action service learning program in the mornings. Under Randy Mecredy, instructor in UA’s Honors College, the students will assist in the clean-up of Hurricane Creek .

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, students will perform service-learning projects at Lake Lurleen State Park. Outdoor Action activities are supported by the Honors College, the Alabama Museum of Natural History and UA Outdoor Recreation.

Black Belt Action

This year, 38 Honors freshmen from 17 different states will work from Monday Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 14, at the Francis Marion High School in Marion. Eight upperclassmen will work as student leaders. Student participants and student leaders will commute each morning from Tuscaloosa to Marion.

Projects include creating a garden center for the biology class, revitalizing the library by painting murals, installing a reading area and donating new books. They also will prepare the bathrooms for remodeling. Black Belt Action is part of the UA Honors College’s 57 Mile Initiative.
