TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama advertising student Candice Ji was named winner of the American Advertising Federation District 7 Mosaic Scholarship for 2015.

The award recognizes academically talented students from backgrounds and experiences that offer a varying perspective in advertising-related disciplines by providing financial help in completing their undergraduate education.

It is given to a junior student who identifies as Hispanic or Latino, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native; or who identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender.

Ji, an international student from Hangzhou, China, said she was thrilled to be named a recipient of the award.

“Winning the award made me feel that I was part of a great advertising community,” Ji said. “When they announced it at the AAF District 7 awards luncheon, I was surrounded by my dear fellow Ad Teamers, my professors and other advertising students and professionals in AAF District 7. I felt grateful and honored to be receiving this award.

“We have a great advertising program at UA that prepares students to do extraordinary works, and with new curriculum changes, it’s only getting better. Awards like this give recognition and appreciation to the program that it deserves.”

Teri Henley, an instructor in the department of advertising and public relations, has worked with Ji both in class and as her adviser in student organizations, including Capstone Agency and AdTeam. She said Ji was deserving of the award.

“Candice is quite possibly the most research-focused student I have ever worked with,” Henley said. “She knows her stuff and encourages student colleagues to learn all they can about the client and consumer using innovative research methods.”
