Alabama Crimson Tide signing day isn’t just for football stars
Al.com – March 26
Cameron Robinson will never forget the day he pulled that crimson-and-white ball cap down on his head on signing day, as the cameras clicked and proud eyes looked on.And while the sophomore center on Murphy High School’s football team may not yet be headed for Nick Saban’s office, on Thursday he did ink his commitment to the University of Alabama, based on his academic prowess, not his three-point stance. Robinson is one of nearly 50 Murphy students participating in a unique program fostered by a partnership between the two schools, and organizers thought it was high time the classroom stars got the same treatment the football standouts enjoy when they commit to a school. “A lot of people think that if you’re going to be smart, you stick to books; if you’re going to be athletic, you stick to sports,” Robinson said. “But I’m here to prove to the world that you can have the best of both worlds.” That “best” includes the opportunity to graduate from Murphy in 2018 with a full year’s worth of core-class credits to step onto campus in Tuscaloosa, or most other schools. Thanks to Alabama’s Early College Program, starting in April, the 46 students honored on Thursday will meet in the high school’s new Murphy University Center to begin taking classes both online and through a new video-conferencing tool.
