UA UnlockED Offers Forum on Race in Public Schools With Noted Journalist

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — UA UnlockED, a student-run organization at The University of Alabama, will offer a forum titled “Confronting Reality: Race in our Public Schools,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in room 1093 of Shelby Hall.

The panel is free and open to the public.

The forum will feature award-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of the 2014 ProPublica and Atlantic magazine article titled “Segregation Now,” which focused on the recent history of race relations and zoning in the Tuscaloosa City Schools.

She has worked for ProPublica since 2011.

The forum also will feature Dr. Utz McKnight, UA associate professor of political science; Dr. Nirmala Erevelles, UA professor of educational leadership, policy and technology studies; Dr. Mary Givens, UA assistant clinical professor of education; and Earnestine Tucker, Tuscaloosa City School Board member from District 2.
