As part of ensuring the health and well-being of UA students, faculty, staff and visitors, The University of Alabama became smoke-free effective Jan. 1. The Student Health Center, the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness, and the College of Community Health Sciences/University Medical Center are offering assistance to individuals who want to stop smoking. Links to these resources can be found on the Smoke-Free Campus website at http://www.ua.edu/smokefree.

Colonial Drive from Eighth Street to Bryant Drive is closed for construction and utility installation through Jan. 15. Directional signage is in place for vehicular traffic.

Faculty, staff and students should remember to Stay on Your Side when walking, driving or biking across campus. The ongoing safety campaign reminds the campus community to use crosswalks, sidewalks and streets appropriately. Doing so keeps traffic flowing and ensures traveler safety.

Gospel singer CeCe Winans will be the featured artist for the 2015 Realizing the Dream Concert on Jan. 17 in the concert hall at the Moody Music Building. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Also, Fox News political analyst Juan Williams will deliver the annual Legacy Banquet lecture at the Hotel Capstone on Jan. 16 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Both events are part of the Tuscaloosa area’s 26th annual celebration in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tickets are on sale at the Moody Music Building ticket office. The University of Alabama Student Government Association is hosting a winter clothing drive through Jan. 16 to benefit the Salvation Army. Donations can be delivered to the SGA office in 2617 Ferguson Center. More information: Katrina Swarthout at info@sga.ua.edu.

UA’s Exercise-Physiology Club will host a weigh-in site for Scale Back Alabama on Jan. 19 and Jan. 22 on the second floor of the Ferguson Center. Weigh-in times for both days are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4:30-6:30 p.m. Scale Back Alabama is a statewide event that encourages Alabamians to achieve a healthier weight. UA students, faculty and staff, regardless of gender, are invited to the third annual Women in STEM Experience “Navigating the Future” symposium, which will be held Jan. 31 in Shelby Hall. The full-day symposium will celebrate women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The symposium is free, but registration is required. The Manderson Graduate School student-led group Heroes 4 Habitat invites students to participate with them in the Charity Chase 5K race for a cause on Feb. 7 at 8 a.m. The race will be held on the pathways along the Black Warrior River, accessible from Jack Warner Parkway near the UA campus.
