Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Recognizes UA’s Garner

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recently recognized Margaret P. Garner, University of Alabama associate professor and interim executive director of the Student Health center, as a Fellow.

The designation honors her commitment to dietetics, her professional accomplishments and her pursuit of life-long learning.

A Fellow signifies that a member has lived up to the Academy’s values of customer focus, integrity, innovation and social responsibility.

At UA, Garner is the interim executive director of the Student Health Center and director of the department of health promotion and wellness.

She served as an assistant dean for health, education and outreach in the College of Community Health Sciences for more than 10 years and as a full-time nutritionist in the department of family medicine for more than 35 years.

She has led a campus-wide strategic planning process for health issues, which created a  group of seven health teams that cut across disciplines and include faculty and staff.

The teams focus on alcohol and substance misuse; tobacco; mental health; financial health; eating disorders; nutrition; and healthy relationships for college students. She recently was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the highest recognition at UA for a faculty or staff member and based on integrity, leadership and service.

From the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Garner has received the Young Dietitian of the Year award, the Alabama Outstanding Dietitian Award, the Medallion Award and the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award for leadership, service and professionalism.

Her professional service at the national level has included leadership in the academy’s Council on Education; Committee on Standards of Education; the Commission on Accreditation; the Committee on Education Programs; the Commission on Dietetic Registration, Legislation and Public Policy; and the Political Action Committee.

She served as chair of the Dietitians in Medical and Dental Education Practice Group and now sits on the academy’s board of directors.

Garner has a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Georgia Southern College and an Master of Science in nutrition, with a minor in public health, from The University of Tennessee.
