UA Relay for Life to Host Oktoberfest Games, Contests

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama chapter of Relay for Life will host its first-ever Oktoberfest from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Kappa Alpha Order house on campus.

Oktoberfest is designed to be reminiscent of an elementary school field day, with teams participating in three-legged races, pie eating competitions, wheel barrow races and costume contests.

Admission to the event is $5, and there will be food and T-shirts for sale to raise funds for Relay for Life. Participating students will earn Panhellenic Points and Service Learning Pro hours.

The event is one of several that UA Relay For Life has scheduled to boost participation and fundraising between now and the main Relay for Life event, which will bring the UA community together for a camp out to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society from 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, until 6 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Sam S. Bailey Track and Field stadium on campus.

Last year, more than 800 students attended the main Relay For Life event, which raised some $70,000. This year, Relay For Life’s goal is to draw more than 900 participants and raise $100,000.

“Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer at some point in their lives, and Relay for Life provides an opportunity for anyone to be able to give back and help finish the fight,” said Christin Spencer, president of UA Relay for Life. “UA’s Relay has grown exponentially in recent years, and I’m excited to see what we can raise this year with even more students attending the multiple events we have scheduled, including Oktoberfest.”

At Relay for Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer. Relay for Life was founded in 1985 and has raised some $5 billion to date.
