UA Professor to Lecture on Russia and Modern World

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s department of modern languages and classics invites the public to hear Dr. Andrew M. Drozd, associate professor of Russian at UA, present the first lecture of a three-part series titled “Russia and the Making of the Modern World” at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in 205 Gorgas Library.

Drozd will lecture on the attitude towards medical doctors as it appears in classic Russian literature. His presentation will cover several works, including “War and Peace,” “Anna Karenina” and “The Brothers Karamazov.”  He will also introduce works by writers who are lesser-known in the West.

“Despite the fact that these works were written by authors of different literary and political opinions, the depiction of doctors in Russian literature of the time was very consistent,” Drozd said. “After discussing each of these in particular, I plan to sum up with what I think is the reason for the consistency.”

The next installment of the series will be on Wednesday, Oct. 15. It will feature Dr. Margaret Peacock, assistant professor of history at UA, who will speak about Vladimir Putin. Information for the third lecture will be announced at a later date.

The department of modern languages andc classics  is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
