TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State will take place from Sunday, June 8, to Friday, June 13, on The University of Alabama campus.
A number of guest speakers will address the participants during the week. Alabama Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey will give the keynote address at 2 p.m. June 8, in the Moody Music Building. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, Lt. Col. Shannon Juby of the U.S. Air Force will address the delegates in Russell Hall. In addition Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer will speak at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, in Morgan Hall.
“American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country,” according to the group’s website. Since the program’s start in 1937, nearly one million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works.
During the week, more than 350 participants will conduct mock elections and learn about civic processes. On Thursday, June 12, the Girls State seniors will visit Montgomery.
