TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — About 16 University of Alabama students, as well as leaders from UA’s Community Service Center, will travel to Moore, Okla., to participate in tornado recovery for the 2014 Alternative Spring Break from Sunday, March 23, to Friday, March 28.

Students will work with Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity to build homes for storm survivors. The trip follows the UA student body’s immediate response to the town’s recovery needs when students and community members donated more than $1,000 in gift cards for storm survivors.

The Community Service Center typically coordinates international service trips for the spring break holiday, but decided that serving in Oklahoma’s efforts this year would be more meaningful for the UA student body and the Tuscaloosa community, said Kimberly Montgomery, assistant director for the center.

“We especially value this opportunity, since students from other campuses were so dynamic in the volunteer opportunities here after our tornado incident,” Montgomery said. “For UA students, this trip presents the perfect opportunity for civic engagement and global citizenship. We expect to help improve the quality of life for two families in the Moore community.”
