The Student Government Association elections are being held today. Students can vote online at mybama.ua.edu. Voting ends at 7 p.m.
UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference is scheduled for April 17 at the Bryant Conference Center. The conference provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to compete for cash prizes while showcasing the research, art or other creative activity that they are doing under the supervision of faculty mentors. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form, including an abstract describing the project, by April 1. The HES Design House on Magnolia Drive will be demolished March 22-29. Surrounding sidewalks will be closed to pedestrians while demolition is taking place. More information: Matt Denaburg with HOAR Program Management at 205-348-1945, 205-572-5170 or mdenaburg@fa.ua.edu.
Several offices at the Ferguson Center have moved to temporary locations due to construction and renovation of the building. The Ferguson Theater, Credit Union, Art Gallery, Crimson Copies and all food services will remain open on the second floor until May 1. On the ground level, the University Supply Store, Starbucks and the Mail Center will remain open throughout construction. Expected completion and opening of the new building is August.

Gorgas Library will remain open on Friday and Saturday evenings until 9 p.m. through April 19 as a pilot project. The music library and the Sanford Media Center located in the building will not be open late hours during this period. Gorgas will not be open late hours during spring break. The Division of Community Affairs, through its Center for Community-Based Partnerships, is accepting nominations for the 2014 Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Awards, as well as requesting proposals in response to the seed-funding RFP, and accepting proposals for poster presentations to recognize the best in community-engaged scholarship. Interested faculty, staff, students and community partners are encouraged to submit nominations and applications. The Yell Crew is a group of student leaders who lead the freshman student section at all home football games. They lead the freshmen in UA game-day traditions, while promoting a fun, loud, spirit-filled atmosphere.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
UA Relay For Life invites students to form teams to honor cancer survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and support those who are fighting the disease. The UA Relay for Life event will be held April 25 at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium. Students can sign up at http://www.relayforlife.org.

EVENTS
University Programs and the ROTC programs will host a screening of “Pearl Harbor” for the Tuscaloosa community in the Birmingham Central Room at the Bryant Conference Center on Wednesday, March 12, as a part of UP’s movie series. Admission is $10, and the movie begins at 6 p.m. A meal will be provided for those who attend.
University Programs will host a Hot Topics discussion about “Situationships” on Wednesday, March 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Tutwiler Hall first-floor living room. The discussion, moderated by UA’s Title IX coordinator Beth Howard, will focus on different relationship situations that students face today, including commitment, love and sex. The discussion includes free food, games and activities.
The University Supply Store at the Ferguson Center will sell merchandise from Bama’s previous championships, bowl appearances and more for $1 on a first-come, first-served basis March 13-14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near the Ferguson Center plaza. All other clearance items have been further reduced to $5, $10 or $15 while supplies last.
Students are invited to Capitol at the Capstone, a legislative forum where students will enjoy a free formal dinner and may submit questions to a panel of local legislators. The forum will be held at Hotel Capstone on Sunday, March 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The panel of legislators will include Sen. Gerald Allen, Rep. Chris England, Rep. John Merrill and Rep. Bill Poole. The Student Government Association’s First Year Council is hosting a fundraiser, called Battle of the Bands, in April. The winner will receive a generous cash prize. Band tryouts will be held Sunday, March 16. Band members who want to audition should send an email to FYCbama@gmail.com with the band’s name and genre.
The Faculty Senate Task Force for Excellence in Equity, Inclusion and Citizenship will hold its second open forum March 17 from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in 125 ten Hoor Hall. Students are welcome to share their views and ideas about campus culture and diversity, Greek integration, the Machine, responsible student citizenship and the fall 2013 school board election.
University Programs will host “House Hunters” on Monday, March 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in 357 Russell Hall. Students will receive a brief overview of Tuscaloosa’s residential housing markets and tips on how to find the right home or apartment.
University Programs will host a Persian New Year celebration for UA students and faculty at the Presidential Village in the seventh-floor Community Room on March 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as a part of UP’s International Expressions. The event will feature Iranian singing and dancing, a musical instrument performance, a Persian calligraphy art demonstration and a photography exhibition.
