ANNOUNCEMENTS

Seventh Avenue in front of the Ferguson Center will be closed on Saturday, March 1, from 6 a.m. to noon. Visit http://roadclosures.ua.edu on a regular basis to stay abreast of campus infrastructure closures.

The Office of Information Technology will perform network configuration changes Sunday, March 2, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The work may result in a general network outage.

Beginning March 7 and ending April 19, Gorgas Library will remain open on Friday and Saturday evenings until 9 p.m. as a pilot project. The music library and the Sanford Media Center located in the building will not be open late hours during this period. Gorgas will not be open late hours during spring break. Research paper due soon and you haven’t started? UA librarians are available Mondays-Fridays, 4-6:30 p.m., through April 24 at the first-floor information desk in Gorgas Library to help you develop your topic, find resources and cite sources. The Childcare Subcommittee of the Faculty and Staff Benefits Committee invites employees to complete a short survey to determine the level of need for child care or elder care for UA employees and students. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes to complete and will provide the committee with valuable information needed to determine the next steps to be taken. Click here to find the survey, which should be completed no later than 5 p.m. on March 7.

The Division of Community Affairs, through its Center for Community-Based Partnerships, is accepting nominations for the 2014 Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Awards, as well as requesting proposals in response to the seed-funding RFP, and accepting proposals for poster presentations to recognize the best in community-engaged scholarship. Interested faculty, staff, students and community partners are encouraged to submit nominations and applications. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Applications for membership in University Stewards are due to 203 Student Services Center by 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. Stewards assist Undergraduate Admissions with student lunch and dorm tours and meet with prospective students and their families to act as a support system and liaison to the University. Students considering membership must attend one of two meetings in 203 Student Services Center on Feb. 24 at either 8 p.m. or 8:30 p.m.

The deadline for students to apply to participate in the LeaderShape six-day, intensive leadership-development institute has been extended to March 1. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

UA students can register to be a part of UADM’s dance marathon that will be held March 1 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. UADM is a student-run philanthropy at The University of Alabama that supports Children’s of Alabama through the Children’s Miracle Network. The yearlong fundraising effort involves UA students and culminates in the dance marathon, a no-sitting event. For more information and to get involved, visit http://www.uadm.ua.edu.

UA Relay For Life invites students to form teams to honor cancer survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and support those who are fighting the disease. The UA Relay for Life event will be held April 25 at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium. Students can sign up at http://www.relayforlife.org.

EVENTS

All students are invited to the State of the Black Union address, which has been rescheduled from its original date and will now be held today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the ten Hoor Hall auditorium. The address will highlight issues facing the African-American community at the Capstone. Dr. Utz McKnight, chair of the department of gender and race studies, will be the keynote speaker. Caring for Camo will host “Be a Hero, Date a Hero” auction today from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Jupiter on the University strip. Students can bid on dates with members of the Army and Air Force ROTC, as well as Miss UA and members of the Alabama Crimsonettes, among others. The cover charge is $5, and all proceeds benefit members of the military. Cash, check or Bama Cash will be accepted for all bids, and Panhellenic points are available for members of Greek organizations who attend. More information: caringforcamoua@gmail.com.

Dr. William Keel, professor of astronomy, will present “Out There and Beyond: The Search for Earth-Like Planets” on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering outside the Nightingale Room.

The Faculty Senate Task Force for Excellence in Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship will host its first listening session March 4 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in 140 Moody Music Building. All students, faculty, staff and local citizens are invited to share their views and ideas about campus diversity, Greek integration, student government and politics, campus culture and the city Board of Education election that was held in 2013. The 2014 Joint Doctor of Nursing Practice Intensive for students, alumni and faculty of The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Alabama in Huntsville takes place March 5-7 on the UA campus at the Capstone College of Nursing and the Bryant Conference Center. The intensive provides students pursuing the DNP degree with the opportunity to explore issues in nursing and examine evidence-based projects developed by students on all three campuses. This year’s event, titled “Trailblazers: DNP’s Seizing Leadership Opportunities,” features presentations from nationally known nursing leaders, program alumni and faculty members.
