The University of Alabama’s 24-hour hazing and harassment hotline at 205-348-HALT (4258) allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. The Career Center has temporarily moved from its Ferguson Center location to the old Capstone Medical Building located at 700 University Blvd. for the Spring and Summer 2014 Semesters. The Career Center will move back to its Ferguson Center location in time for Fall Semester 2014. The Capstone Heroes award recognizes UA students, faculty, staff, student organizations and members of the community whose contributions to life at the Capstone reflect the values within the Capstone Creed. The University of Alabama Writing Center walk-in hours in Gorgas Library begin Wednesday, Jan. 8, and will continue Mondays-Thursdays, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., through April 25. Writing Center staff will be available on the first floor near the elevators to assist students develop writing skills necessary for academic success. The service is free. The Writing Center main facility in 322 Lloyd Hall is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Fridays.
Microsoft DreamSpark is now available. DreamSpark is a subscription program from Microsoft to provide professional developer and design tools for teaching and research. DreamSpark Standard covers all faculty, students and labs across the University. Products include Visual Studio, Windows Server and SQL Server. Software may be installed on personal machines of eligible users. DreamSpark products may only be used for academic instruction, academic projects and noncommercial research. UA’s Office of Information Technology warns students to be aware of a recent phishing email with the subject line “Notification: Your Webmail Upgrade!” The email is an attempt to get students to click on a link that would supposedly upgrade their Crimson mail accounts to a new user interface. The email states that failure to upgrade will result in loss of email accounts. Students who received the email should delete it. Students who answered the email should change their email passwords immediately. Students who need assistance changing their email passwords should contact the IT Service Desk at 205-348-5555. STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Student Government Association will hold two meetings in 309 Ferguson Center for UA students who are interested in learning more about the SGA and how to get involved in the election process. The first meeting will be held Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The second meeting will be held Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Pre-election procedures and campaign guidelines will be reviewed. Attendance is not mandatory to be considered for candidacy.
Become a Peer Leader and strengthen your overall skillset — including leadership, communication and facilitation — and establish positive relationships with faculty, staff and peers. Peer Leaders serve as role models and mentors to first-year students while helping to facilitate first-year-student courses alongside faculty. These courses are designed to help first-year students adjust to the University, develop a better understanding of campus resources and acquire essential academic success skills.
