Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 6
University of Alabama geologist Samantha Hansen got a holiday surprise when she learned a couple of days before Christmas she was among 102 up-and-coming researchers recognized by President Barack Obama’s administration for their innovative research and commitment to community service. “I was deliriously happy, surprised and overwhelmed in a good way,” she said. Hansen, a UA assistant professor of geological sciences, is among the winners of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, according to a release from the White House. University of Alabama ‘Face Guy’ Starts Jimmy Fallon Internship
Media Bistro – Jan. 6
University of Alabama student Jack Blankenship didn’t start holding up an oversize resume or “Hire Me!” sign at Crimson Tide basketball games in 2012. But he might as well have. Per a report in the Tuscaloosa News, the infamous “face guy” has parlayed it all into a winter-spring internship at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that starts today. All thanks to his holding up a giant photo cutout of his scowling face at college B-ball games to distract opposing players: Blankenship appeared as a guest of Fallon in 2012 and on other talk shows after the cutout of his face drew the attention of photographers at Alabama basketball games and eventually worked its way into sports blogs. The expression started as a joke among middle school friends and was still “a goofy joke” to Blankenship when he affixed it to poster board and brought it to a basketball game.
