TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama welcomes author Lila Quintero Weaver to its lunchtime lecture series Feb. 6 in room 205 of the Amelia Gorgas Library.
Weaver is the author and artist of “Darkroom,” an autobiographical graphic novel about growing up Latina in the Black Belt in the 1960s.
She addresses the myth that the South was a monolith of black and white cultures, and she creates new ways of understanding the Civil Rights Movement by including the first-person voice and observations of a Hispanic child, while presenting the material in an innovative graphic format.
Weaver’s lecture presents an opportunity to learn more about a pivotal time in Alabama history.
This lunchtime lecture series is free and open to the public. The Alabama Center for the Book, The University Libraries at The University of Alabama and The University of Alabama Press have partnered to present this new lecture series. Gorgas 205 will be set with tables, and attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch or purchase lunch in the library’s grab-and-go café.
The Alabama Center for the Book is the Alabama Affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book and is housed in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library, room 201, The University Libraries at The University of Alabama.
