TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Division of Student Affairs has named five students as recipients of spring 2014 UA Away scholarships, as part of a scholarship initiative that supports learning opportunities for students to work, serve or study away.

The UA Away scholarship recipients are:

Karis Dison, of Birmingham, a senior studying nursing who will travel to Costa Rica to volunteer on a medical service trip.

Lindsay Ghiroli, of Branford, Conn., a junior studying nursing who will travel to the Dominican Republic on an Alternative Spring Break.

Luckie Milad, of Auburn, a junior studying biology who will spend the spring semester taking courses in Antibes, France.

Kinsley Fowler, of Centreville, a senior studying nursing who will travel to Costa Rica to volunteer on a medical service trip.

Anna Woods, of Cement City, Mich., a senior studying French who will spend the spring semester taking international relations courses in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

“Participating in global education will allow these very deserving students the opportunity to expand their world view and learn more about themselves,” said Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost. “It is our hope that each recipient will use their experience to further enhance our rich educational culture at UA—this is the goal of the UA Away scholarship.”

The main goal of the UA Away scholarship initiative is to provide students with unique learning opportunities to study in different environments, serve others and experience on-the-job training.

“I’ve always been extremely passionate about volunteering, so the idea of leaving the country with fellow UA students to give back to others who are truly in need is an extraordinary thing,” said Ghiroli, who plans to join Doctors Without Borders after graduating from UA. “It will be an eye-opening experience that I hope will be a huge step toward my future goals.”
