SAFETY

The University of Alabama’s 24-hour HALT hotline allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. Callers are asked to include as much detailed information as possible. The hotline number is 205-348-4258 (HALT). More information: Office of the Dean of Students at 348-3326.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

UA classes will be dismissed on Nov. 27; however, the University will operate regular business hours. UA will cease regular operations Nov. 28-Dec. 1 for Thanksgiving. Classes will resume Dec. 2.

Bama Dining will adjust its hours for the Thanksgiving holiday. The adjusted schedule begins today. Click here for hours and locations.

The Student Health Center will be closed Nov. 28-Dec. 1 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The center will reopen Dec. 2. For the winter holidays, the SHC will be closed Dec. 16 after 3 p.m. and Dec. 21 through Jan. 1. Normal operations will resume Jan. 2.

Ferguson Mail Center box rentals for the spring semester begin Dec. 1. Students who choose to rent mailboxes can receive U.S. Postal Service mail and UPS and FedEx items using the same address. Mailboxes are rented first-come, first-served and may be rented for various terms. Semester rentals are $50; summer rentals are $25. Students who do not rent mailboxes will not be able to receive letters, cards, and small mail items sent via the United States Postal Service. The installation of a new boiler in the Ferguson Center is expected to be complete on or before Dec. 1. If colder weather is predicted during Nov. 25-27, project contractors will provide temporary heat in the building. A complete utility outage is scheduled for the Ferguson Center Nov. 28 through Dec. 1. No power, heating, air or water will be available in the building. Due to safety and security reasons, no one but authorized personnel should be in the building during this outage. People with questions or concerns should contact April Sanders, facilities manager, at 348-4273 or asanders@sa.ua.edu.

The sidewalk on the east side of Hackberry Lane, going north from the McCorvey Drive intersection to Jack Warner Parkway, will be closed Nov. 27, 2013, through Jan. 14, 2014. Click here for a map of campus road closures. More information: Allison McCants at 348-1369 or amccants@fa.ua.edu.

The University of Alabama will host the Alabama state high school football championships at Bryant-Denny Stadium Dec. 5-6. The event will affect parking and traffic on campus. Certain parking lots near the stadium will close; other lots will have restricted access. Colonial Drive and Wallace Wade Avenue will be closed both days. All Crimson Ride routes, except the gold route, will be rerouted; riders should expect delays. STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Student Government Association is accepting applications for the 2014 homecoming executive director. The executive director manages approximately 20 associate directors who oversee various events. Prior experience is helpful but is not necessary to apply. Registrations for Spring Get on Board Day 2014 are being accepted. The event will be held Jan. 15 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ferguson Center. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The “Got Meals?” meal-donation program allows UA students the opportunity to apply for a meal allotment in times of need. Students may donate one meal swipe to a student in need at http://bamacares.ua.edu/gotmeals.cfm. Students may also apply for meals at the link. The Community Service Center is accepting applications for two alternative break trips in 2014: one to the Dominican Republic during spring break and a 10-day trip to Belize during Interim break in May. EVENTS

Sigma Delta Tau sorority will host a Thanksgiving potluck dinner today for all females who are interested in joining the sorority. Join University Programs, Housing and Residential Communities, and the Counseling Center for Stress Free Daze on Dec. 4 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Ferguson Center. Activities include movie loops of a “Nightmare Before Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, Zumba and meditation classes, and massage therapy. The University of Alabama Press will hold a holiday book sale of some of its more popular titles. The event will be held in 309 Ferguson Center on Dec. 6, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and on Dec. 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Book prices will range from $3 to $25. More information: Shana R. The School of Music will present its annual show of holiday music, “Hilaritas,” on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Moody Music Building concert hall. Click here for ticket information.

Circle K will host an annual tradition Dec. 8 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Members will arrange thousands of luminarias on the Quad between Denny Chimes and Gorgas Library and along University Boulevard. Hot chocolate will be served, and carolers from the Circle K will sing along as the Denny Chimes play a variety of Christmas carols. The event is free to the public. Student organizations and local businesses can support the event with donations of time and money. Proceeds will benefit the One Spark Campaign for Jean Dean Reading is Fundamental, a program that works with the Kiwanis Foundation to provide books in the homes of at-risk children.
