UA Presents a World of Offerings for International Education Week

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Capstone International Center is sponsoring International Education Week from Monday, Nov. 11, to Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Events include movies, workshops on resume writing and information about UA’s study-abroad programs. Details may be found at the program’s website.

The Capstone International Center initiates, promotes and supports UA’s international efforts on campus, throughout the state and around the world.

Events open to the public include:

Study Abroad Information Panel, 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, Ferguson Center Forum. The session will answer questions about the study abroad process. UA’s Capstone International Programs, along with the offices of  Financial Aid, Student Receivables and the Registrar will participate.

Indian Movie Night: 8 p.m. Nov. 11, Lloyd 120. Screening of an Indian film.

Study Abroad Fair: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 12, second floor Ferguson Center. All UA faculty-led and exchange programs will participate.

International Internship Information Sessions: 3:30 p.m., Nov. 12, Bidgood Hall 225. Information will be presented on UA international internships for summer 2014 in Barcelona and Dublin.

“The Dialogue” movie screening, 7 p.m. Nov. 12, Gorgas Library, 205. Documentary following American and Chinese students as they travel together through Hong Kong and Southwest China. An additional screening will be 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14, in the  Global Café at UA’s Center for Community-Based Partnerships.

“Through the Doors: Diversity of the World and Intercultural Connection,” noon Nov. 13, Ferguson Center to B.B. Comer Hall. Exotic food tasting with an ethnic costume show and music.

“Communicating Science to the Public,”11:30 a.m. Nov. 13, Gorgas Library, 205. The event features science comedian Brian Malow. Malow also will appear at “Science is for Everyone: Rational Comedy for an Irrational Planet” at  3:30 p.m. Nov. 13 Shelby Hall 1093.

Chinese Culture Social, 7 p.m. Nov. 13,  Ridgecrest South Atrium.  A social celebrating Chinese culture.

Apwonjo Bake Sale for UA’s Kiva Lending Team and African Display, Nov. 14, Floor Ferguson Center. This fund-raiser features displays on different African tribal concepts of beauty compared to Western idea of beauty.

Mango Languages Demonstration, 4 p.m. Nov. 14, Gorgas Library, 109-A. The event will demonstrate language software available for UA students.

International Coffee Hour and Open House, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 15, B.B. Comer Lawn and B.B. Comer Hall 105. Refreshments will be served and information made available on international organizations.

World Soccer Tournament, 1-6 p.m.  Nov. 15, RecCenter Fields. This soccer tournament includes teams representing countries from around the world.

Photo/Art Contest Reception, 5 p.m. Nov. 15, Anderson Room, Ferguson Center. This reception is for the finalists and winners of the Study Abroad Photo Contest and Elementary Art Contest.

Picture Yourself Abroad, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 18, Ferguson Plaza. This includes a photo booth with scenes from around the world.

“Prospects for Women in Afghanistan in Light of NATO’s Pending Withdrawal,” 11 a.m. Nov. 19, Room 95, Rowand-Johnson Hall. A presentation will be made by Charlotte Ponticelli, former senior coordinator for international women’s issues at the U.S. Department of State and a member of the board of directors for the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council.
