UA Campus to Get a Taste of NASCAR

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama campus is accustomed to the roar of a Saturday crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium, but, on Oct. 17, visiting speaker Larry McReynolds hopes to get them excited about the roar of NASCAR vehicles.

McReynolds, former NASCAR crew chief and an analyst for Fox Sports, will discuss his experience with NASCAR as an insider and now as a member of the media. He will share with students what types of skills they need to get into the business of sports journalism. His talk begins at 1 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Student Theater and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

“Larry McReynolds is the face of NASCAR telecasts for many people,” said Dr. Andrew Billings, director of The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication. “He also comes with those insider credentials. He’s been there, he’s done that, and he knows of what he speaks.”

McReynolds, a Birmingham native, previously served on crews for NASCAR stars Davey Allison and Dale Earnhardt Sr. He has been in the booth for Fox Sports since 2001. He will visit campus as a guest of the APSC.

The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication, housed in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, serves as an umbrella for sport communication-related research, teaching and activities taking place on The University of Alabama campus, with a number of faculty fellows providing mentorship for students participating in such research.
