HOMECOMING

All students interested in running for homecoming queen should attend an informational meeting today from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in 312 Ferguson Center. Those who cannot attend should designate someone to attend in their place. Candidates must be sponsored by a registered student organization on campus; must be a full-time student currently enrolled; must have a minimum 2.500 GPA; must have a total of 48 credit hours, with 24 hours being earned at UA. ATHLETICS/RECREATION

Know how to “Get in the Game.” The Crimson Tide football team will play its home opener against the Colorado State Rams at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Whether you currently have tickets or need tickets, you will want to know how to “Get in the Game”, how the changes to the way student tickets are handled, how to enter the stadium (Gate 30 or 31) and how parking near the stadium affects you. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Faculty, staff and students can now text UA’s Customer Service Center directly to report non-emergency campus repairs, such as damaged ceiling tiles, building maintenance and repairs, and grounds care. Reports can be made between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday–Friday. To report repairs, SMS to 57595 with BAMAREPAIR, followed by the issue and location. For all emergencies or repair issues occurring after hours or on weekends, contact the Customer Service Center at 348-6001.

The College of Community Health Sciences is leading a campuswide effort to vaccinate students, faculty and staff against the flu this year. The shots are free. UA or other forms of health insurance are not required. During September and October, nurses from the University Medical Center, Student Health Center and Capstone College of Nursing will be located at sites across campus to provide the shots. Upcoming dates and locations include the following:

The University of Alabama and the Bryant Museum are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant with a variety of activities and events. Coach Bryant would have celebrated his centennial milestone on Sept. 11, 2013.

New additions to the Bryant Museum’s section on the coach are now in place, and a new book and a new documentary about Bryant’s life are available for sale. Fans can participate in the centennial celebration by entering their memories of Coach Bryant at http://www.bryant100.com. Written comments and audio and video submissions will be accepted.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Office of the University Registrar introduces Schedule Builder. This new feature will allow students to build the optimal class schedule based on course preferences and time set aside for breaks during the week. These breaks can consist of work, practice and other activities during which students are unable to take classes. Students can use Schedule Builder to generate the class schedule that fits their needs. Access Schedule Builder by logging in to the Student Tab of myBama. More information: registrar@ua.edu.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Student Government Association is offering $2,000 in research grants to undergraduates during September. Find the application at http://sga.ua.edu under the Applications box. Applications may be turned in to the SGA office in 231 Ferguson Center or through email to ammontgomery@crimson.ua.edu.

The Office of Judicial Affairs is now the Office of Student Conduct. Under the new name, the office continues to be the central coordinating office for implementation of the Code of Student Conduct. The staff of the Corolla will be conducting upcoming yearbook workshops in basic news and sports writing, interviewing, videography, photojournalism and design. The workshops are free to any student. For specific dates, send an email to corollaorganizations@gmail.com

Capstone Alliance will be launching a new initiative, “Out At UA: Online Campus Inclusivity,” an online visual depiction of LBGTQA+ and allied employees on campus in association with the celebration of National Coming Out Day. Capstone Alliance is a UA organization that advocates for lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgendered and queer faculty, staff, students and their allies. The purpose of the initiative is to demonstrate that the UA campus is a welcome and safe environment for all individuals. To participate in the online visual depiction, individuals can send a picture of themselves, their names, employment titles and departments, their self-identification terms (e.g., lesbian, gay male) and their gender pronouns (e.g., she, his, they) to kdwalter@sa.ua.edu by Sept. 27. Capstone Alliance will have photo sessions available throughout the month for individuals who want to have their pictures taken. CAREERS

Students majoring in any subject are invited to the General Interest and Business Career Fair on Sept. 18 and to the Technical and Engineering Career Fair on Sept. 19. Both fairs will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. Full-time and internship opportunities will be available. Those attending should bring their Action Cards and several copies of their résumés. Attire is business professional. No one will be allowed in the fair wearing flip-flops, jeans, shorts, T-shirts, or party or cocktail dresses. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Scholars for Community Outreach, Partnership, and Engagement is accepting applications for both research associates and SCOPE fellows. SCOPE’s purpose is to enhance the capacity of UA students to collaborate with faculty and community partners in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes to address challenges facing communities. In addition to research experience under the leadership of engaged scholar mentors, SCOPE also provides members access to developmental workshops, research presentation opportunities and assistance in external funding. STUDENT SUPPORT

UA has several resources for students who may need assistance handling any stresses and challenges they encounter during their years on campus. The Counseling Center provides counseling, outreach programming and consultation services to all enrolled students. The Student Health Center and University Medical Center provide medical and psychiatric services for students. Eating Disorders Anonymous meetings are held each Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Collegiate Recovery Community building at 516 Paul W. Bryant Drive E. behind Rite Aid. The meetings, led by students, are open to anyone in recovery from an eating disorder and anyone interested in learning about recovery. Dinner will follow each meeting. The University of Alabama Writing Center has resumed walk-in hours in Gorgas Library, Monday–Thursday, 7–9 p.m. Writing Center staff will be available in the Java City seating area to assist students develop writing skills necessary for academic success. The center also operates an appointment-only service in 332 Lloyd Hall, Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Services are available for the fall semester at both locations through Dec. 6.

EVENTS

Calling all singers, poets, comedians and karaoke legends. Marr’s Field Journal presents Third Thursdays, starting Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Starbucks in the Ferguson Center. Gamma Phi Beta will host its first chili cook-off on the side lawn of Canterbury Chapel from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 20. Cost to enter chili in the competition is $15; cost to attend is $5. All proceeds will benefit the club’s philanthropy projects that focus on helping young females develop their potential. Alpha Omicron Pi will host its annual Backyard Bash on Sept. 21 at the AOII house before the UA vs. Colorado State football game. A barbecue lunch will be served three hours prior to kickoff. A silent auction will feature items from UA head football coach Nick Saban and country-music star Miranda Lambert. A live band will provide entertainment. Admission is $10. The Future Alumni for Tradition and Excellence will host the FATE Bama Bash at the Paul W. Bryant Museum on Sept. 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come see the new Paul W. Bryant centennial celebration exhibit and tour the museum. Free pizza, games and prizes will be available. Each student who is not a FATE member can join at the door for $15 and receive a FATE cooler, T-shirt, more than $200 worth of coupons and an invitation to FATE monthly events. The UA chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing will host a fundraiser on Sept. 24 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Cold Stone Creamery on the Strip.
