TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Leigh Moscowitz, author of the upcoming book “The Battle over Marriage: Gay Rights Activism through the Media,” will speak at The University of Alabama Oct. 4.

In the book, Moscowitz, an assistant professor at the College of Charleston (S.C.), examines how prominent news outlets covered the same-sex marriage debate between 2003 and 2012. The book will be released in November by the University of Illinois Press.

“This is an important event for not only how we teach diversity but also specifically helping students to make the connection with all the publicity pertaining to same-sex marriage,” said Dr. George Daniels, journalism professor and assistant dean for administration in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

“We want students to understand the media’s role in that national conversation. We want to make sure students are prepared to talk about all parts of society, all lived experiences, not just the ones they’ve experienced.”

October is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning History Month.

Moscowitz’s public address will be 10 a.m., Oct. 4, in room 216 of Reese Phifer Hall. The event is sponsored by the College of Communication and Information Sciences, the College’s Diversity Forum, the department of journalism, the UA Women’s Resource Center and the Capstone Alliance.
