UA Students to Serve Community in Hands on Tuscaloosa: Earth Day Edition

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama students will disperse across Tuscaloosa to perform service projects with nonprofit organizations from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, April 5, for Hands on Tuscaloosa: Earth Day Edition.

UA’s Community Service Center and the Student Government Association are organizing the effort. Service projects include river cleanup, Hurricane Creek Campground cleanup and work on beautifying Head Start Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority bike trail.

For more information on the locations of the projects, contact Barbara Grimes at  the Community Service Center at 205/348-2865 or bgrimes@sa.ua.edu. Students will gather at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, at the Ferguson Center to go to the projects.

“The goal of Hands on Tuscaloosa is to foster long-term relationships between students and community partners,” said Paige Bussanich, director of civic engagement and outreach at the Community Service Center. “I hope the Earth Day Edition of Hands on Tuscaloosa continues for years to come so that UA students are better aware of the environmental issues surrounding our community.”

In the past, Hands on Tuscaloosa projects have encouraged more than 600 students to participate in aiding the community. Students familiarize themselves with the needs of the Tuscaloosa community and develop lasting relationships while at the University.
