UA Social Work Students to Hold Panel Discussion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama students enrolled in a class, Social Work Practice and Communities, will hold a panel discussion on the “Role of Social Workers in the Criminal and Civil Justice Systems” at  5:15 p.m. today in 223 Little Hall.

Panelists include Judge Jim Roberts, Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court; Judge Elizabeth Hamner, Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court; Judge Herschel Hamner, retired, Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court; Greg Gambril, assistant district attorney, Tuscaloosa County; Joe Van Heest, public defender, Tuscaloosa County Public Defender’s Office; and Jeremey Sherer, assistant United States attorney.

According to Joanne Terrell, faculty member in the UA School of Social Work, “there are vast differences between the criminal and civil justice systems, including different types of punishments, laws and burdens of proof.”

This event is free and open to the public.
